I looked over the reviews and there are many negative reviews mixed in with average to great reviews. My assumption is that most of the negative reviews are based on defective units. The high number of negative reviews can be accounted for either in that most people will complain before they bother to give a good review, just human nature. The other reason could be that with this particular model Cuisinart has a quality control problem and too many defective units are being sent out. Either way, if you want a toaster that can accept wider breads, then check this model out. If you get a defective unit from Amazon, they have a great return policy and will refund or exchange quickly. You still get a toaster that can toast wider/thicker breads, bagels, croissants, toaster muffins, or anything that is wider than a regular slice of bread. Up to and including anything to 1.5" wide. Housing is cool touch so you will not get accidentally burned. You get consistent browning with the always even shade control which electronically monitors the heating elements. Other functions include defrosting, reheating, and a cancel button.
